App settings

Right-click the tray icon → Preferences. These settings control tracked AI edits, snapshot retention, startup behavior, and assistant connections.

Tracked changes for AI edits

What happens when an instruction doesn’t say either way:

  • Follow the document’s setting (default); track when Word’s own Track Changes is on. This is the one to keep.
  • Always track AI edits; every edit becomes a revision, whatever the document says. Worth choosing if you work on documents that leave your desk.
  • Never track AI edits; edits go in clean. Reasonable for your own rough drafting; think before using it on client work.

An individual instruction always wins over this setting.

Snapshot retention

Writespect keeps a complete copy of the document from before every edit. Two limits control how many pile up:

  • Keep snapshots for … days; anything older is pruned.
  • Keep at most … per document; the oldest beyond this are pruned.

Both apply, so a busy document is capped by count and a dormant one by age. Snapshots are complete documents, so on a long document they add up; if disk space matters, lower the count rather than the days.

You can delete snapshots at any time, and the folder is shown in the Check connection… window.

Start with Windows

On by default, so the Word tools are there when your assistant looks for them. Turn it off if you’d rather start Writespect by hand.

Reconnecting clients

Writespect re-registers itself with your AI assistants at launch if it notices an entry has gone missing; some assistants rewrite their configuration when they update and drop entries they didn’t add. Turn this off if you manage those configuration files yourself and would rather Writespect left them alone.

Where things live

The Check connection… window shows the folders. In short, under your local application data:

  • Snapshots; the pre-edit copies described above.
  • Logs; a bounded, rotating diagnostic log. It records which tool ran, the outcome, and how long it took. It does not contain your document text.
