Glossary

Assistant / AI client. The program you talk to; Claude Desktop, Claude Code, Cowork, ChatGPT Work, ChatGPT Codex. Writespect gives it Word tools; it does the reasoning.

Bridge. A small bundled program that lets an assistant which speaks over standard input/output reach Writespect’s local server. The Connect menu sets this up; you never run it yourself.

Closed-file editing. Editing a saved .docx that isn’t open in Word. Supported, and faster for bulk work, but tracked changes are not available on this path because Word is what records revisions.

MCP (Model Context Protocol). The open protocol assistants use to reach tools on your machine. Writespect is an MCP server; your assistant is an MCP client.

Document anchor. A stable way to identify a passage, such as a heading, section or clause number, list item, table cell, or quoted opening words. Using two anchors helps the assistant find the right text even after the document changes.

Redline. A comparison document showing what changed between two versions. Writespect produces Word’s own native redline, not an imitation.

Revision. A single tracked change; one insertion or one deletion; that you accept or reject.

Snapshot. A complete copy of your document saved before an edit, kept on your machine so any change can be undone. Retention is yours to set.

Surgical edit. Changing only the span you meant, rather than rewriting the whole paragraph. Matters under tracked changes, where a rewrite would show as deleting and retyping the paragraph.

Tray. The Windows notification area beside the clock, where Writespect lives. Right-click its icon for the menu.

Vizspect is the companion connector for Microsoft Visio. One assistant can use Writespect and Vizspect in the same workflow to work with a Word document and its related Visio drawings while both originals remain editable.
